Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang First Female Vice President Of Ghana

As we celebrate the inauguration of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman as the first female Vice President of Ghana, we at the Girls Education Initiative of Ghana (GEIG) reflect on the significance of this moment for our country and the young women we support. Prof. Naana Opoku Agyeman's journey—marked by excellence in education and advocacy for women’s rights—has long inspired us, and her new role adds yet another milestone in the advancement of women in leadership.

Elizabeth Patterson the Founder of GEIG shared, “In 2015, I had the honor of being part of a dinner hosted by the British High Commissioner, where Prof. Opoku Agyeman was the special guest. At that time, as the Education Minister, she was already a role model for many of us, especially the girls we serve. Her commitment to education and women’s empowerment was evident, and it was a privilege to connect with her.

She also added, “While watching the swearing-in ceremony, my young girl, just four years old, came to lay by me and said, “She’s the president of Ghana!” To which I corrected, “She’s the Vice President.” But how beautiful it is that a child could imagine a female leader at the highest level of government! We look forward to the day when a female president can be a reality in Ghana, and perhaps, in her lifetime”.

Fast forward to 2024, when we celebrated the graduation of one of our pioneering students, Bushira, through our Girls Education Initiative. A message of congratulations was sent from none other than Prof. Opoku Agyeman herself. She wrote:

"What a joy!! It's always one life impacted meaningfully. We shall keep doing what is right for many others to smile and to see their visions and potentials realised. Greetings – NOA."

This message is a reminder of the profound impact that one life, one opportunity, and one woman’s leadership can have on future generations.

As we watched Prof. Opoku Agyeman being sworn in as Vice President, we felt an overwhelming sense of pride—not just for her remarkable achievements, but for the promise this holds for the girls and young women of Ghana. This achievement tells them they, too, can aspire to reach such heights.

We are incredibly proud to be part of the journey that empowers young girls like Bushira to dream big. Today is another step forward in the pursuit of gender equality, and GEIG remains committed to inspiring, educating, and uplifting girls to fulfill their potential.

Congratulations to Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, our new Vice President of Ghana, and to all the young women and girls who are watching, learning, and dreaming.
